The hopping machine built for the purpose of achieving a small but autonomous and stable jump. The jump was originally inspired by observing the jump of the grasshopper, and because of that the machine vaguely resembles a large insect. The dimensions of the machine are 11.5 inches long, 4.75 inches high and 5.25 inches wide. It has four legs, each of which is attached to a spring roughly three inches long and having a spring constant of 266. Using a slipping gear and a LEGO XL motor the legs are pulled in towards the body of the machine. When the gears slip, the legs push the machine from the ground and produce a jump roughly two inches high. The project was completed in a timely fashion, achieving a reasonable height with its jump and remaining stable while doing so. The project weighs 1.47 kilograms.
